SCHEMA recently co-sponsored a workshop organised by the Innovation Centre for Applied Sustainable Technologies (iCAST) called Advancing Sustainable Solutions in Catalytic Depolymerisation for Chemical Recycling.
Held on Wednesday 25 June, in Swindon, the event looked at the problem of plastic waste by exploring innovative chemical recycling methods with a particular emphasis on catalytic depolymerisation. It brought together experts from both industry and academia to bridge the gap between research and real-world industrial applications.
The workshop featured insightful talks and group discussions on various advanced catalytic processes, including thermal/pyrolytic and catalytic and solvolysis processes that break down plastics into valuable monomers/chemicals. It also explored how depolymerised materials fit into circular economy models and considered the challenges of scaling depolymerisation technologies for chemical recycling. Linked to this, iCAST member Uplift360 delivered a talk on room temperature chemical recycling for advanced materials and composites. Uplift360 is a cleantech company developing chemical-based technologies to recycle and reuse advanced materials.
