Dr Alexander “Sandy” Craze is based at the University of Oxford and is looking at the potential of these sustainable thermoplastics as alternatives to petrochemical-based, pervasive polymers like polystyrene and its derivatives, that are extremely hard to recycle.
He recently completed his DPhil under the supervision of SCHEMA Director, Prof Charlotte Williams. It focused on catalyst and material development for improving sustainable thermoplastic materials from renewable or waste sources. These materials were designed with a focus on end-of-life options such as recyclability and degradability. These included polycarbonates from CO₂ and poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) from biomass.
